Phosphorus-Containing Polyisocyanurate Elastomers for Flame Retardant Application

Polyurethane (PU) is one of the most common and versatile polymers in many applications especially construction automotive industry where improvement thermal stability flame retardancy crucial. As polyisocyanaurate (PIR) well known to have a high decomposition temperature phosphorus motifs are usually used as retardants polymers, introduction PIR polyurethanes can lead PUs with retardancy. We investigated synthetic pathway introduce polyisocyanurate via co-trimerization 4,4′-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (4,4′-MDI) monoisocyanate, which was synthesized from reaction between diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate (DEHP) 4,4′-MDI. The resulting PIR-DEHP prepolymer prepare elastomers both solvent solvent-free conditions. elastomer polyester polyol 15 wt % 1,4-butanediol component showed char formation (25.5 %) 55% reduction total heat release (THR) relative reference without content. It expected that use be extended other applications, such rigid PU foams compact thermosets bulk conditions required.
